Inspired by the groundbreaking work of Django Reinhardt in 1930s Belgium, Gypsy Jazz (or Gypsy Swing) has evolved into an internationally celebrated folk tradition. Blending the energy of jazz with the rich musical heritage of Romani culture, it remains one of the most distinctive acoustic styles in the world.
This special Folk Week performance features the guitar duo of Jonny Hepbir and Roberto Soto, bringing to life classic Gypsy Jazz standards alongside original compositions by Django Reinhardt.
Jonny Hepbir is widely regarded as one of the most authentic voices in British Gypsy Jazz. Over the years, he has performed with some of the finest musicians in the genre and beyond, building a reputation for virtuosity, sensitivity, and deep stylistic understanding. His album Turkish Blend, released on Refined Records, showcases his original compositions and collaborations with leading guitarists.
Praised as “the English virtuoso” by Guitar Magazine, Jonny has performed extensively across the UK and internationally, appearing at major festivals and prestigious events, as well as private performances for notable figures including Sir Paul McCartney. His appearances include the Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois-sur-Seine, the Love Supreme Jazz Festival, and numerous leading jazz and folk festivals.
Together with Roberto Soto, Jonny Hepbir delivers an engaging and spirited performance, celebrating the enduring legacy of Gypsy Jazz with flair, authenticity, and world-class musicianship.
